It was defensive player Mitchell Cancilla’s first international tournament as a Region I Player from New York West. He and 17 other players from the ‘95 Boys’ Region I ODP Team met at JF Airport and set off for a 10-day trip in Riccione, Italy, on Apr. 23.
They played good, competitive soccer — no one could say the U.S. Region I team didn’t hold their own. Region I won their first game against Rimini, 5-0, before falling 2-1 to Modena. In the third game, they played Ravenna and won, 2-1.
Unfortunately, their 2-1 record and plus-five goal differential left them one goal shy of playing in the finals. Other teams like Holland, Rimini and San Marino offered to play some friendly matches with our U.S. Region I team, however, so the team was able to continue to enjoy the sport with other international soccer teams.
The trip not only exposed them to quality international soccer, it gave the boys a chance to experience the culture and take home memories to last a lifetime. Along with Mitchell, New York West midfielder Jordan Allen was also a part of the team.
Mitchell would like to thank all of the great coaches and trainers he’s had the fortune of working with. From his Empire United Soccer Organization Director, Tom Garigan, and his coach, Aaron “Kiwi” Lines (who’s helped Mitchell with his footwork and tactical skills), to John Opher, who has helped him work on strength and speed training. Mitchell would also like to thank New York West and Region I for providing him with the opportunity and training to advance to the regional and national levels. In addition to having coaches with such diverse and accomplished backgrounds, Mitch is able to play with youth from all over New York, the eastern states and beyond.
It’s been an exciting privilege to be a part of the U.S. Youth Soccer’s Olympic Development Program. With each experience, players learn so many valuable life skills that can only help enhance their lives as young men. To all the people who work so hard and volunteer their time and experience for the love of the game by working with our kids, thank you! To all the players who work and play so hard for the love of the game, well done!
