NYSWYSA-owned league will offer regional competition, promotion and relegation, and a more accessible pathway for member clubs.
The New York State West Youth Soccer Association (NYSWYSA) today announced the launch of The Excelsior League of New York (EXL), a NYSWYSA-owned and operated competitive league that will begin play in Spring 2027. The EXL will provide high-quality regional competition for boys’ and girls’ age groups through a member-focused structure that includes promotion and relegation.
As NYSWYSA’s competitive league platform, the EXL will bring member clubs together around meaningful competition, consistent standards, accountable administration, and regional delivery that keeps opportunities responsive to players, families, and local communities.
“The Excelsior League is an investment in a stronger competitive pathway for players and clubs across Western and Central New York,” said Hugh Goodridge, President, New York State West Youth Soccer Association. “By pairing meaningful regional competition with consistent standards and greater accessibility, we can create a league that serves our members and strengthens the game throughout our territory.”
Ever Upward
The league draws its identity from New York State’s historic motto, “Excelsior” — Latin for “Ever Upward.”
That spirit is reflected in the EXL brand, which is inspired by the rising-sun imagery associated with the New York State coat of arms. The imagery represents the league’s commitment to continually raising the standard of competitive youth soccer through collaboration, player development, and meaningful competition.
A Regional Approach to Player Development
The Excelsior League of New York will kick off its inaugural season in Spring 2027, featuring competitive divisions for boys’ and girls’ age groups.
The EXL will strengthen the competitive pathway for NYSWYSA member clubs by providing meaningful regional competition closer to the communities where players live and train.
The league will use a promotion and relegation structure to place teams in appropriately competitive divisions and create a performance-based pathway between levels.
The EXL will focus on several core priorities:
- Meaningful, appropriately matched competition.
- A clear, performance-based pathway between competitive levels.
- Regional scheduling that limits unnecessary travel.
- Consistent league standards and accountable administration.
- Collaboration that supports member clubs, players, and families
“Our focus now is disciplined implementation,” said Flo Egan, Executive Director of the New York State West Youth Soccer Association. “We will work with member clubs to coordinate scheduling, apply consistent competition standards, and provide clear league administration so participants know what to expect throughout the season. That practical, member-centered approach will be essential to the EXL’s success.”
Supporting a More Connected Soccer System
The EXL is part of NYSWYSA’s broader effort to create clearer, more connected competitive opportunities for member clubs throughout Western and Central New York.
By listening to member clubs and families and providing regionally relevant programming, NYSWYSA aims to complement its existing grassroots and competitive offerings with an additional opportunity for appropriately matched teams. The result will be a league that is competitive enough to challenge players, regional enough to remain accessible, and collaborative enough to strengthen the soccer community as a whole.
